Something off the beat?
Answers to the usual questions, short videos for the setup bits, and a form for anything that’s broken. We read every report.
Frequently asked questions
Which instruments does Beatalyzer work with?
Anything with an attack. Tap the on-screen pads with your fingers, connect pads, an e-kit or a keyboard over USB or Bluetooth MIDI, or use the microphone for acoustic drums, piano, guitar, trumpet and so on. MIDI gives the most precise timing; the microphone is the most flexible.
The microphone isn’t picking up my notes. What should I check?
First, that Beatalyzer has microphone permission (Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone). Then try the input mode: Auto listens and picks a setting, but if it guesses wrong choose Drums for sharp hits or Instrument for softer attacks. Get closer to the phone, turn the metronome click down or use headphones so the click isn’t picked up as a note, and avoid rooms with a lot of echo. A phone case covering the mic is a surprisingly common culprit.
How do I connect a MIDI device?
USB: plug in with a USB-C or Lightning adapter, then pick MIDI as the input. Bluetooth MIDI: pair the device in Beatalyzer’s input settings (not in the iOS Bluetooth settings, which is where everyone looks first). If a keyboard sends on several channels, Beatalyzer listens to all of them. For rudiments, assign your pads or keys to left and right so each stroke is graded by hand.
What does the vonba score measure?
Three things, on a scale to 1000: how well you played (how many notes landed in the on-beat window and how tightly they group), how hard it was (tempo, density, silent clicks, odd meters and sticking, against your level’s ceiling) and how long you held it (length of the take and whether your timing held to the end). The analysis page breaks it down and tells you what would raise it next time.
Beginner, Intermediate, Pro: what changes?
The width of the on-beat window, how much difficulty counts, and the tone of the feedback. Beginner is forgiving and encouraging, Intermediate tightens the window, Pro demands precision, speed and stamina. Change it any time in Settings; your history keeps the level each take was scored at.
It said I played eighths against a quarter-note grid. What does that mean?
You played roughly twice as many notes as the pattern asked for (or half), so grading each one against the grid would be meaningless. Beatalyzer tells you instead of handing out a random score. Check the grid setting in the top bar and go again.
Does Beatalyzer need an account or an internet connection?
Neither. Everything is analysed and stored on your device, and the app works fully offline. The only feature that uses the network is the optional AI coach, which talks directly to the AI provider you configured with your own key. See the privacy policy.
How do I set up the AI coach?
Settings → AI coach. Choose a provider (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google or Groq), paste an API key from your own account with them, and pick a voice: Analytical for a precise coach or Snarky Smartypants if you’d rather be roasted. The key stays on your device. Usage is billed by your provider at their rates; a take summary is small, so it costs fractions of a cent.
Where is my history, and how do I delete a take?
History lists every session with its score; open one for the full analysis. Swipe a session to delete it. Hall of Fame keeps your best challenge rounds per input. Deleting the app deletes everything, and nothing is stored anywhere else.
Which devices are supported?
iPhone and iPad running iOS or iPadOS 18.4 or later. Turn the phone sideways while recording for the performance layout.
I found a bug. What’s the fastest way to get it fixed?
Use the form below or the feedback screen in the app (Settings → Report a problem), which fills in your device and versions for you. Tell us what you did, what you expected and what happened instead. Leave an email if you’d like to hear back when it’s fixed.
How-to videos
Short and to the point. They open on the video site in a new tab; nothing is embedded here, so this page loads nothing from anyone else.
Report a bug
Tell us what you did, what you expected and what happened. We collect only what’s on this form, nothing else; see the privacy policy. Love the app? The place for that is a review on the App Store, which helps more than you’d think.
